Everything about Semi-formal totally explained
» The term semi-formal is also used in formal methods (computer science) to mean not fully semantically formalized.
Semi-formal is a
dress code that's synonymous to
black tie, and indicates a level of dress between a
lounge suit and
white tie. Other sources state that semi-formal dress isn't synonymous to
black tie as a
tuxedo isn't worn and a dark suit with tie is more appropriate.
Traditionally, semi-formal calls for a
dinner jacket in the evening or a
stroller before six o'clock. Women traditionally wear either an
evening gown or a
cocktail dress, depending on the time of day.
Additionally, in parts of North America, "semi-formal" can also refer to a
high school dance, usually for ninth and tenth graders. While not as formal as
proms, semi-formals require girls to wear dresses and boys to wear suits.
